Flavors of the Mediterranean Tour of Astoria, Queens, NYC
This tour is also offered through the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) as part of their “Tours & Off-site series” Individual sign up is on ICE’s website, or contact us about scheduling a private tour.
Culinary treats reach beyond Grecian shores in Astoria, where you will sample flavors of the greater Mediterranean. Indulge in the flavors and smells where we might sample honeyed baklava, nutmeg-laced bureks, fried haloumi, house-cured salumi, apple sheesha, and hibiscus tea without leaving New York City. Each stop along the tour offers a nibble, demonstration or shopping opportunity. You will start the morning with Greek pastries and coffee, then to sample Bosnian bureks. You will continue to a Mediterranean grocery, where you may fill your bags with assorted feta, olives, nuts, oils, and other culinary delights. Pass “old world” fish mongers and butchers whom locals savor, and enter an Italian salumeria for a demonstration in sausage stuffing or mozzarella making. A turn into the heart of Egyptian, Moroccan and Lebanese culture will set you amongst hookah and tea bars and Middle Eastern specialty shops. Rest your feet at a favorite funky Egyptian restaurant for lunch.
