My name is Amirh, I’ve been teaching with ATS for over 2 years. I’ve enjoyed working with students from second grade to high school. I’m a NY 🏙️ breed from Queens to Long Island. Since I can remember food has been a great part of my life and my dad being from Guyana 🇬🇾 allowed me to experience Caribbean cuisine. I’ve been cooking since I could reach a stove in my grandma’s kitchen and my mom’s kitchen. My first teaching experience was my volunteering with City Harvest’s nutrition education program. One of my favorite things to cook with my students is sushi 🍱! Sushi is also one of my favorite dishes. I love creating different flavor combinations with the filling and featuring seasonal produce. Sushi is extremely versatile and can include any number of filling options and flavors. Outside of the classroom, I love cooking with my two kids, traveling with my family, exploring the farmers market, and listening to music. This school year, I am so excited to continue working with the students to develop their palates and find the joy in cooking 🥘 🥑 🧆 🍑 🍒!

WEEK ONE RECIPE: Butter & Tea Sandwiches

This week we made the ATS tradition of butter and tea sandwiches. We started off with heavy cream and salt in a jar. Then we got shakin’! I split the kids into two groups and timed how long it would take to make the butter. We discussed what happens when the fat molecules and water are agitated. I had the kids choose what flavor they wanted and naturally they chose cinnamon/brown sugar 😊 The students loved their butter and requested more!

I also made apple butter which was a little change to feature the seasonal apples. We cooked down McIntosh apples with apple cider and cinnamon/nutmeg. The kids enjoyed not only tasting the butter but the cider as well. This recipe was off the curriculum but it was nice discussing the apple varieties as well as how cider is made. The entire classroom smelled of the classic Fall scents 🥧🫚 The students couldn’t get enough and I was happy to share any extra.
