With Chinese New Year beginning this week, we decided to make Spring Rolls in class this week! We began by discussing the holiday and common ways to celebrate. Food is an integral part of holidays, so being able to connect a cultural tradition with taste and flavor is usually impactful for students.

Before jumping in to make the recipe, I gave a demonstration of how to correctly soak the rice paper and roll the spring roll. During this time, students were tasked with writing down the steps they saw, similar to coding. We discussed the connection between a recipe and coding, both being instructions that are important in getting the final, intended result.

Ingredients needed:

  • Rice Wrappers
  • Vermicelli Noodles
  • Herbs (cilantro, mint)
  • Carrot |
  • Cucumber
  • Bell Pepper

A simplified recipe is:

  • Soak rice wrapper in water for 10-15 seconds.
  • Layer veggie slices, herbs, and noodles on the rice wrapper.
  • Fold sides of the wrapper in.
  • Pull the side closest to you up and over the ingredients.
  • Roll up the spring roll tightly like a burrito.

Overall, the students loved being able to create a recipe that allowed them to chose their own fillings and required some technical precision when wrapping. They decided they wanted to make their spring rolls look like they were from a fancy restaurant, so plated them beautifully before eating!

Book a Class or Party

An on-site dinner party is an awesome way to spend time together with family and friends. Enjoy a fun evening while showing off your inner chef skills.
